Learning with Syeyutsus, the popular Indigenous Learning series in support of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Call to Action #57, kicks off January 23, 2025.
Nanaimo, BC - Learning with Syeyutsus, a free virtual speaker series presented by Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools (NLPS) in partnership with UBC Press and Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) returns for its fifth season, bringing together Indigenous thought leaders and authors to explore key themes tied to Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Call to Action #57.
Season 5 explores the deep intersections of Indigenous knowledge, cultural revitalization, and the ongoing impact of colonial histories. Through rich conversations with Season 5 authors, we will explore the resilience of Indigenous communities through topics like rock art as resistance, intergenerational learning, and the transformative power of storytelling in reclaiming identity.
This year highlights the enduring role of traditional ecological practices, the rich cultural legacy of Indigenous art, and the insights from historical and contemporary analyses of colonial expansion. Other discussions will delve into the innovative realms of Indigenous cinema and the decolonial narratives shaping our understanding of environmental ethics and cultural practices. We hope to offer our audience an inspiring and thought-provoking journey into the wisdom, creativity, and determination of Indigenous Peoples in addressing cultural, ecological, and social challenges.
