Workshop: Publishing as Knowledge Sharing in the Digital Age

Tuesday, May 14, 2024 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
University of Manitoba

The workshop is hosted by University of Manitoba Libraries and facilitated by Darcy Cullen, Assistant Director, Acquisitions, UBC Press.

Indigenous community-engaged research spans a wide variety of forms and formats – oral histories and teachings, audio-visual media, interactive mapping, documentary videos, and language apps, and more. What are the possibilities for publishing and knowledge-sharing? How might the results of this research be shared back with community and made available to the broader public in culturally respectful and formal ways? Join us for this workshop that pursues those questions and introduces RavenSpace, a new model of scholarly publishing designed for Indigenous studies in a digital age.

The morning session (10:00 am–Noon) will include an interactive discussion contrasting conventional publishing with new possibilities for digital scholarship. We will address the unique attributes of community-engaged research, including priorities in Indigenous knowledge sharing and data sovereignty. The session will include an overview of RavenSpace tools and processes. This is an open session, recommended for knowledge holders, scholars, students, administrators, librarians, community engagement professionals, and others involved in Indigenous knowledge sharing.

The afternoon session (12:30–2:00 pm) will provide a hands-on workshop for authors and groups exploring publication. You will learn what’s involved in creating a multimedia publication, and explore a “pathway to publication” plan, through discussions about capacity, community participation, content/materials, timelines, funding, and others supports. A one-hour follow-up session with the presenter will be offered to those teams who wish to refine their plan to bring back to community. A light lunch will be served.

The workshop is hosted by University of Manitoba Libraries and facilitated by Darcy Cullen, Assistant Director, Acquisitions, UBC Press.
